چکیده

Simulation and modeling are useful tools in prototyping advances in many areas of technology. The performance of modern processors advances much faster than that of storage components making disk systems prime candidates for simulation. Simulating disk systems allows researchers to determine and quantify the performance impact of alternative file system designs and disk data rearrangement techniques. This paper describes a System Assisted disk I/O Simulation Technique (SAST). This technique uses a real system to estimate disk request service times, relieving the researcher from the burden of modeling the target system. The system accepts disk trace data as input, and accurately predicts disk service times. In addition, we describe a disk trace collection technique capable of collecting accurate trace data from the Windows 95

Reducing I/O Complexity by Simulating Coarse Grained Parallel Algorithms

Block-wise access to data is a central theme in the design of efficient external memory (EM) algorithms. A second important issue, when more than one disk is present, is fully parallel disk I/O. In this paper we present a deterministic simulation technique which transforms parallel algorithms into (parallel) external memory algorithms. Specifically, we present a deterministic simulation techniq...

Compute Node Compute Node

Many scientiic applications that run on today's multiprocessors, such as weather forecasting and seismic analysis, are bottlenecked by their le-I/O needs. Even if the multiprocessor is conngured with suucient I/O hardware, the le-systemsoftware often fails to provide the available bandwidth to the application. Although libraries and enhanced le-system interfaces can make a signiicant improvemen...

User-Level Parallel File I/O

Parallel disk I/O subsystems are becoming more important in today’s large-scale parallel machines. Parallel disk systems provide a significant boost in I/O performance reducing the gap between processor and disk speeds. We describe a Unix-like file I/O user interface, implemented in a parallel file I/O subsystem on an MIMD machine, the nCUBE 2. Based on message passing, we develop parallel disk...

A Novel Zone-Bit-Recording-Boosted Performance Scheme for Log-structured File System

I/O becomes a major performance bottleneck in modern computer systems because of the mechanic nature of disk drives. One important technique to improve disk performance is Zone-Bit-Recording (ZBR) technology, which increases the capacity by putting more data in the outer disk cylinders. A direct consequence of ZBR is that outer tracks have higher data transfer rates. LFS is another technique to...

An Efficient Periodic-Request-Grouping Technique for Reduced Seek Time in Disk Array-based Video-on-Demand Server

Disk throughput is significantly affected by scheduling of disk I/O requests. In the case of VoD (Video-on-Demand) servers, disk throughput is directly related to the number of user requests that can be served simultaneously. In this paper, we propose an efficient periodic request grouping scheme for disk array-based VoD servers to improve the disk throughput. To reduce the disk seek time that ...
